Howdy from Central NC - Atlas Shrug checking in

OK, this is my second time joining up. I hope this second BB forum lasts longer than the first one did... ;-)

This is also my second time today typing up this intro, as the entire first one somehow disappeared during the submission process. Oh, bother. (The forum software does not seem to like my iPad - switched to a PC for this effort.)

I’m a native of The Triangle region of NC, but I’m in a slow-but-accelerating move from the Iron Triangle of Liberal Thought to the relative wilds of nearby Chatham County (as far as I can from the NE corner that is infected with UNC-Think to a terminal degree).

While fairly well versed in The Gun Stuff, I’m a neophyte in The Radio Stuff. I’ve had a Technician license for a while and will soon upgrade to General. I’ve been playing with HF for the last couple of months. I seem to be buying lots of copper wire lately...

I’m also diving in deep to permaculture, tractors, solar power, sawmills, and welding in addition to the aforementioned radio comms. Starting a homestead and permaculture farm as my third career mandates such.

FWIW, I’m an exiled instructor from the early days of RWVA Project Appleseed, and a plank holder in the original spin off - WRSA (now carried on by CA in the form of one of the best information aggregation sites on the internet). I think Quietus from this forum could basically say the same thing.

I took one class with Scout - Day / Night Carbine in October 2020.

I hope to learn a good bit from y’all.

Thanks. And I agree, the waters are just fine. Lots of crazy currents, but they take you to neat places. Methinks (me-hopes) that this may be one of them, or at least a map of sorts.

WRSA was supposed to be a spinoff of Appleseed? Interesting.

Well, it depends upon what you mean by “supposed to be,” I suppose.

In essence, WRSA was formed by a subset of the Appleseed instructors from the first couple of years. There were some that wanted to go further than Appleseed, the powers that be disagreed with them, those with the different mindset were cast aside, and with a few others started WRSA. That was fairly short lived (a year or two) and as noted is now living in the form of the WRSA blog.

In no way did Appleseed condone or approve of WRSA. So you could perhaps say an unauthorized spinoff?

I hope that completes the picture some. This goes back to the 2005-2007 years, roughly.

It does. Thank you.

The big D got started in a motel room in Worland WY about 2006, during an AAR discussion of Jack Dailey's (Fred's) first time of taking Appleseed on the road. The actual first time was in late October '05, southwest of Dallas. I was there at that first time as was the host of the WRSA site.

The motel room discussion brought up a point by a watcher: Is Appleseed going to allow holstered pistols on a rifle firing line. "Fred" asked my thoughts as the resident pistolero, me being an employee of the major of the NW Arkansas M1911 shops. I said, no problemo. That advice was rejected.

Above, Atlas Shrug as another plankowner from several years prior to Appleseed kicking off, alludes to the divergence in thinking within Appleseed. Fred wanted 25m rifle shooters and lots of them, while his strong hand (WRSA founder) wanted the option of more advanced training for those who wanted it.

The separation between Jack Dailey's Appleseed and the splinter group WRSA was ugly. Lawsuits were threatened by Jack's people over website data and intellectual property. Curiously, the website and forum of the original outfit still exists.

WRSA as a training group did not last more than a year or two max. Basic reason for the current WRSA host, is that he could not travel anymore on his own dime. Class fees were about nichts. First rifle class was in Douglas WY in September '07. Other classes were put on at various locations in FUSA for a short time.

Welcome, Atlas. Make sure you keep an eye on the NC thread inside the regional networking forums on here. Hopefully figure out a way to transfer some of this Triangle-subverting energy into a meetup IRL.

Will do. Sounds like a plan.
